What a check-in system is actually for

Most organizations already have a check-in procedure. It usually involves a worker texting a supervisor when they arrive and again when they leave, and it usually works right up until the day it matters — because the failure mode of a manual system is silence, and silence looks exactly like a worker who is fine and forgot.

An automated check-in inverts that. A missed confirmation is not something a supervisor has to notice; it is an event that raises an alert on its own, to people whose job is to respond to it.

How do Gameo Pro safety check-ins work?

  1. Check-ins are configured for the worker, site or scenario in the collaborative platform.
  2. At the defined point, the app asks the worker to confirm they are fine.
  3. The worker confirms in a single interaction, and continues working.
  4. If no confirmation arrives, an alert is raised automatically — no supervisor action is required.
  5. A trained agent in one of our emergency response centers receives it, with the worker’s GPS and indoor position.
  6. The agent works through your organization’s protocol for that site, which the system applies automatically.

How often should lone workers check in?

There is no single correct interval, and any vendor offering one is selling a number rather than a method. The interval follows the risk, and the risk assessment is what should set it. Two principles hold across most programmes.

The first: the interval is a measure of how long you are willing for someone to lie undiscovered. If a worker is doing something where an incident would be immediately life-threatening — confined space entry, work at height, an atmosphere risk — then a two-hourly check-in is not a safety measure, it is a documentation exercise. The second: intervals that are too short get resented, then gamed, then ignored. A programme people comply with at a moderate interval protects better than one they defeat at an aggressive one.

Employers in the United States carry a general duty to protect workers from recognized hazards, and most Canadian provinces set out explicit expectations for how workers who are alone are to be checked on.
